    Fort Crawford, near present day Brewton, Ala., was established in 1816  by elements of the 7th US Infantry under order from Major Gen. Andrew Jackson. Purpose was to monitor Spanish activities in W. Fla. and curtail hostile Creek Indian activities. The fort was occupied by units of the 7th US Infantry in 1816 and 1817, and by the 8th US Infantry in 1817 and 1818. It was abandoned in 1819 after the US purchased Fla. from Spain and the Indian menace abated.
